Microsoft was the first company out of the gate with a next-generation gaming console when they unleashed the Xbox 360 in late 2005. While it trails in pure technical specifications, Microsoft is counting on superior developer tools to give the Xbox 360 an edge in the quality and quantity of games available for the system.
The Xbox 360 was made available via a two-tiered release with entry level and high end systems. The entry level system, known as the Xbox 360 Core System, lacks the detachable hard drive and wireless controllers of the high end system, which is simply called the Xbox 360.

The Xbox 360 uses DVD as it's primary media format. The lack of support of a high definition format (such as Blu-Ray or HD-DVD discs) makes it slightly less future-proof than Sony's PS3, but the 9GB of data provided by dual-layer DVD should server gamers just fine for the near future.
